If you’re like me and love a good granny square, then you’re always looking for seasonal inspiration as the months start changing. In the Fall & Winter, it’s granny squares for sweaters and cardigans which I love, don’t get me wrong. But in the Spring and Summer, it’s all about the bucket hats, coasters, and accessories for me! Here are my top 5 Granny Squares that I’ve been loving this Summer to use for all kinds of temp-friendly projects!
Daisy Granny Square
One of my new favorite projects to make is the Daisy Granny Square! With endless color combinations, you can make these look super aesthetic and clean or fun and retro like I did for this child’s cardigan I have been working on. There are so many possibilities with this Daisy Granny Square; hot pads, coasters, blankets, bucket hats, I could go on! This summer I decided to work on some pastel squares using the Pound of Love yarn from Lion Brand in the colors White, Quartz, and Pastel Pink. Unfortunately, the mint green was a Big Twist color so I will update once I know if Michael’s carries it! For the center of the flower, I used Homeland yarn by Lion Brand in the color Canyonlands, a beautiful rusty bronze gold color. I’m using acrylic yarn for my cardigan project, but this granny square would be so gorgeous using cotton yarn to make some cute kitchen and homestead accessories!

African Flower Granny Square
Another one of my new favorites I have discovered this yea is the African Flower Granny Square. I was so mesmerized by how unique this flower motif looked that I immediately got into it! I ended up creating a few different sets of 100% cotton coasters that look absolutely STUNNING! My absolute favorite set is the Turquoise set, but I’m thinking of connecting the rest of these hexagons and making a table runner for the Summer! For this project I used 24/7 Cotton from Lion Brand – I won’t list all of the colors I used here, keep your eyes out for a future tutorial and pattern drop for that info!

Sunburst Granny Square
The Sunburst Granny Square is an all-time classic but really shines during the Spring and Summer months! You can expand it with more rows to add endless color options, or keep it simple and cute with the classic 4-5 rows of petals. This granny square is super versatile, however depending on the yarn you use, it can become very thick so keep that in mind when designing your projects! I’m currently working through the rest of my Big Twist yarn, so I decided to make this Sunflower Child’s Cardigan with this granny square! Since the yarn I used is acrylic, this wouldn’t be ideal for Summer, but you can easily swap it out for cotton and now you have a light and flower cardigan! I also created a few bags using the same pattern with a green background instead, and I absolutely love the contrast the green makes! Yarn used: Pound of Love by Lion Brand

Traditional Granny Square
I will ALWAYS be loyal to my traditional granny square. Hear me out, there are so many Summer projects that the traditional granny square is perfect for! Take this beach bag I’m working on for example. I crocheted 5 big granny squares, lined them with an old tapestry I had lying around, connected them together, and now I have a gorgeous (and huge) beach bag for the pool! Projects like this are perfect for using up scrap yarn that otherwise wouldn’t be able to create an entire project. Yarn used : 24/7 cotton yarn by Lion Brand

Sunflower Granny Square
Last but not least is the beautiful and classic sunflower granny square that always reminds me of Summer! I’m never used this square in my own pattern before, but I can definitely seeing myself using it in so many patterns in the future. Everything from hats to tank tops to home decor, this sunflower granny square is perfect for decorating your home and garden with beautiful hints of Summer!
